The University of California, Irvine (UCI, UC Irvine) is a public land-grant research university located in Irvine, California, United States. Established in 1965, it is one of the ten campuses of the University of California system. UCI created the first Earth System Science department in the United States and is known for research in areas including machine learning, fuel cells, cancer research, and transportation studies. It has been a member of the Association of American Universities since 1996. As of Fall 2024 it enrolled about 37,300 students. Its founding chancellor was Daniel G. Aldrich Jr. The university's motto is the Latin "Fiat lux" ("Let there be light").
