The University of Pennsylvania (Penn, UPenn) is a private Ivy League research university based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The institution traces its origins to an academy founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin and is one of the oldest universities in the United States. In artificial intelligence and robotics, Penn is best known for the GRASP Laboratory (General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception) at Penn Engineering — one of the world's most important centers for research on mobile robots, drones, manipulation, machine perception and machine learning. The university is a non-profit institution funded through research grants, tuition and its endowment.
