Founded 1994 · Cambridge, United StatesW3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is the international organization that develops open technical standards for the World Wide Web. It was founded on 1 October 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. For nearly three decades it operated under a joint administration of four host institutions: MIT (USA), ERCIM (Europe), Keio University (Japan) and Beihang University (China). On 1 January 2023, W3C reorganized as an independent public-interest 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The consortium brings together hundreds of member organizations and develops, through a consensus process, standards such as HTML, CSS, SVG, XML, WCAG (accessibility), WAI, WebAssembly and WebRTC that form the foundation of the modern web.
