xAI

xAI is an American artificial intelligence company founded in 2023 by Elon Musk together with a team of a dozen or so researchers — among them Igor Babuschkin, Greg Yang, Christian Szegedy, Yuhuai Wu, Tony Wu, Kyle Kosic, Manuel Kroiss and Toby Pohlen. The company develops the Grok family of models and serves them through the xAI API platform.

Operations are spread across several US locations: San Francisco and Austin serve as the main hubs, while Memphis hosts a compute facility housing the Colossus supercomputer. Headcount is estimated in the several hundreds.

Funding came exceptionally fast for such a young entity: a seed round of around $135 million in December 2023 was followed by a $6 billion Series B in May 2024. In total the company has raised over $22 billion across nine rounds, at valuations exceeding $50 billion. Investors named include Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz and Valor Equity Partners.

Since February 2026 the entity has operated as SpaceXAI LLC and is a subsidiary of SpaceX.
