Luminous is a family of large language models (LLMs) developed by the German company Aleph Alpha (Heidelberg), introduced in 2022. It includes the Luminous-base (13B), Luminous-extended (30B), Luminous-supreme (70B) variants and the fine-tuned Luminous-supreme-control. The base and extended variants are multimodal (text + image). The family is notable for its focus on explainability (including the AtMan method) and “sovereign AI” for enterprises and government. Luminous was subsequently succeeded by the Pharia model family.
