About
MAI is a family of AI models developed in-house by the Microsoft AI division led by Mustafa Suleyman. The first models — MAI-1-preview (a mixture-of-experts text model trained on about 15,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs) and MAI-Voice-1 (a speech-generation model) — were announced on 28 August 2025. The family is part of Microsoft's strategy to build its own models alongside its partnership with OpenAI.
