Anthropic hands off Agent Skills: 1M published, 280M installs

Anthropic donated the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation on Thursday. The name, logo, GitHub organisation and agentskills.io domain go with the specification. It is the same foundation that received Model Context Protocol from the company, and which Anthropic co-founded with Block and OpenAI.

Key takeaways

  • Over 70 agent platforms integrated it: ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, VS Code
  • A million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed
  • Anthropic hands over the name, logo, GitHub organisation and agentskills.io domain
  • Lead maintainers are David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag, acting as individuals
  • AAIF membership is not required to use or contribute to the standard

The standard comes down to two things Anthropic handed over:

SKILL.mdthe file that teaches an agent one task or domain
agentskills.iothe specification domain, donated along with the name and logo

What a skill is

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent one task or domain, plus any scripts and reference material it needs. Anthropic built the mechanism while working on Claude Code, which handled general knowledge well but lacked the procedural knowledge real business tasks require.

Claude Code launched in October 2025, and within weeks developers published thousands of skills on GitHub and wrote loaders for Codex, Cursor and OpenCode. Anthropic published the specification as an open standard in December 2025.

A second donation after MCP

The script repeats Model Context Protocol: a standard announced by one company, then broad adoption, then handover to a neutral foundation. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain it, but as individuals rather than as representatives of their employers.

AAIF is meant to be a neutral home for the specification and a guarantee that the community decides where it goes. Anthropic states that joining the foundation is not a condition of using the standard or contributing to it.

Why it matters

The handover settles a question about control, not about technology. A format built on a markdown file is trivial to implement, so its value lies in everyone reading the same specification. While it belonged to one vendor, competitors integrated it on that vendor's terms. A neutral owner removes that political cost, and with a million skills published the stake is no longer adoption but governing the safety of what people install.

What's next

  • The proposed roadmap covers versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for skill authors and installers
  • Specification changes are to be discussed on the project's Discord
