What actually opened
Boston Dynamics launched a facility called the Robotics Metaplant Application Center. It operates inside the Metaplant America campus owned by Hyundai Motor Group, outside Savannah, Georgia.
Atlas robots train in a live automotive production environment, not a lab. The first tasks are logistics preparation and sequencing parts for assembly.

The claim versus the market
The numbers are large. Hyundai speaks of 25,000 Atlas units across Hyundai Motor and Kia plants worldwide in the coming years.
For scale: the International Federation of Robotics counted roughly 7,000 humanoids sold worldwide across all of 2025, covering industrial and professional applications.
Training is not production
Training alone does not prove production readiness. As Humanoids Daily notes, working through a task in a test environment is one step. Boston Dynamics describes its Atlas training method as reinforcement learning in simulation. Millions of hours in parallel on GPUs, with randomized friction, weight distribution and sensor noise, then validation on hardware.
Why it matters
Takt time, repeatability and people working alongside are three things that no demo tests. The risk is symmetrical too.
A facility ten times larger in 2027 means costs rise before the first throughput evidence appears. Success in Georgia does not automatically transfer to a plant with different equipment.
