Chesky: agents need their own OS, not a layer on top of iOS

Brian Chesky, Airbnb's chief executive, argued on 1 October 2026 that AI agents need their own operating system, not a layer bolted onto iOS or Windows. His company launched AI search the day before, so the claim has backing.

Key takeaways

  • Published 1 October 2026, a day after Airbnb's fall update
  • The ask: AI at kernel level, an SDK for agents, components that compose
  • Rejection of the Quarterback model: An arrangement where one agent owns the whole user relationship and parcels work out to other services, becoming the single point of entry.: one agent monopolising the user
  • Chat works poorly for shopping because it forces several turns before a result
  • The 30 September update brought text and voice search and support in 50+ languages

Why not another app store

It starts with a critique of the path taken by OpenAI. "ChatGPT tried to do their little app store... you need to have a software developer kit and an operating system," Chesky says. The difference is architectural: a catalogue in a chat solves distribution, not integration.

He wants AI at Kernel level: The lowest layer of an operating system, managing hardware and permissions. A capability built in here is available to every application, not just one. and agents that compose, with MCP as the ready-made wiring to software. Instinct and Muse come up as examples.

Chat is a poor shopping interface

The second claim concerns commerce. Talking to a bot forces several turns, so Chesky wants richer controls, not a text box alone. Hence the "multiplayer" mode: a trip is planned by a family or group of friends, not one person in one chat. His read on the market is blunt.

I don't think we've cracked consumer AI.

What has already shipped

The 30 September update is not a roadmap but a list of things already running.

FeatureWhat actually works
AI searchqueries by text or voice
Filters from the querytyping "baby" surfaces cribs and playgrounds
Listing highlightskey features written by AI
Comparison toolhomes placed side by side
Customer support50+ languages, voice coverage expanding
Maps and neighbourhoodsfriends' trips and neighbourhood pages, Paris first

Chesky called it "just the very beginning", noting that $100 billion flows through Airbnb.

Why it matters

The argument is not about features but who controls the middle layer. If agents end up as a catalogue inside a chat, power repeats the app-store arrangement: one catalogue owner, everyone else a supplier. If a real operating system for agents appears, integration gets cheaper and competition widens. The view from a platform this large carries weight, because it pays for every separate integration.

What's next?

  • Services from the update roll out in stages through autumn 2026, with BabyQuip baby gear from November across 60+ US cities
  • Chesky said the AI search would iterate quickly over the coming months
