First 11-vs-11 Humanoid Soccer Match Played at RoboCup 2026

RoboCup 2026 in Incheon hosted the first ever full 11-vs-11 humanoid soccer match. B-Human of Bremen beat HTWK Robots of Leipzig 4-0. Both sides fielded Booster Robotics machines. The footage and the federation’s verdict circulated more widely on 28 August.

The match took place on 5 July, but the footage and the federation’s assessment only spread more widely in late August — Robohub published its write-up on 28 August. RoboCup 2026 was the first edition held in South Korea and drew over three thousand participants.

The Hardware Made the Difference

Since this was the first match in an 11-vs-11 format, earlier Humanoid Soccer League: The RoboCup league for full-size humanoid robots. Per the federation’s mission the robots must play autonomously, with no remote control during the match. games were played with smaller squads. Jumping to eleven players is not just more robots on the pitch — it is role assignment, positional play and avoiding collisions with your own team.

This match shows how far humanoid robotics has come. We have seen increased teamwork and advanced skills over the years already, but the new humanoid hardware paired with the new level of intelligence provided by AI puts humanoid robot soccer on another level.

The Road to 2050

RoboCup started in 1997 with a single goal: build a team of robots able to beat the reigning human soccer world champions by 2050. Almost three decades later the match format finally mirrors what is played on grass.

Why It Matters

Eleven players is a different engineering problem from five. The number of interactions that cannot be planned in advance grows, so the weight of decisions each robot makes locally grows with it. The pitch is a cheap proving ground: the rules are clear, the result is measurable, and a mistake costs a goal rather than an accident. The skills built here — teamwork, motion prediction, fast locomotion — transfer later to the warehouse and the home.
