On 1 October 2026 Shopify shipped Canvas, an infinite workspace that lays out every page of a store at once. Merchants edit elements directly or describe changes to the Sidekick agent, and the preview renders working code rather than a static image. The feature is reaching existing stores gradually.
Key takeaways
- One interactive canvas holding every store page, with panning and zooming
- Sidekick's changes land in real time, from a single section to a store-wide redesign
- The preview shows real interactions and animations across products, collections and screen sizes
- Out of scope: Theme Store themes, Markets, translations, app blocks and app embeds
- A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving automatic updates
A canvas instead of a section list
The old theme editor showed one page at a time with a section list down the side. Canvas inverts that: the view spans the whole store structure, and dropping to a single block requires no screen switching. The entry point is Online Store and then Themes — create a new theme or duplicate an existing one.
Shopify also simplified its theme architecture so the agent can parse store files more reliably. That cuts both ways: a structure easier for a model to read leaves less room for unusual work.
The price of convenience
The serious catch is operational rather than marketing. A theme run through Canvas drops out of automatic updates, so fixes shipped by Shopify will have to be applied by hand.
| Area | Status in Canvas |
|---|---|
| Preview | working code, interactions and animations |
| Editing | directly or by chatting with Sidekick |
| Theme Store themes | not supported |
| Markets and translations | not supported |
| App blocks and app embeds | not supported |
| Automatic theme updates | disabled once edited in Canvas |
Add the missing support for app blocks?App blocks: Interface fragments supplied by apps from the Shopify App Store that a merchant drops into theme sections without touching code., translations and Markets — three things most mature stores rest on.
A crowded category
Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and Framer all have model-driven builders, and Lovable does the same for web apps. Shopify's edge is not the model but the fact that product data, payments and shipping already sit inside.
Why it matters
Competition is moving from the quality of generated code to control over store data, because a site builder is now a platform feature rather than a standalone tool. The cost shows up in the fine print: convenience comes at the price of the theme update path.
What's next
- The rollout to existing stores runs over the coming days, with no full list of supported plans
- Markets, translations, app blocks and app embeds are promised as additions, with no date
- Shopify has not said how it will handle the loss of automatic updates for Canvas-edited themes
