Who, whom and for how much

Unichem, founded in 1976 in Ansan with more than 2,000 employees, has so far supplied natural leather for car interiors and fashion. Buying Loomia is a move into an entirely new segment. It will pay 8.6 billion won for a stake equal to 6.5% of its capital: USD 4 million in cash, 1 million in stock and 1 million as an earn-out: Part of the price paid conditionally, only after agreed targets are met after the deal., via a reverse triangular merger. The co-CEOs will be Madison Maxey, Loomia's founder, and Kim Han-joo, Unichem's chief science officer.

What Loomia is

Loomia, founded in 2014 by Madison Maxey (a Stanford graduate), develops LEL (Loomia Electronic Layer) — a way to flexibly bond electronic circuits to cloth and leather. The key was solving the disconnection problem during bending with a non-printed mesh. The company sold a Smart Skin dev kit (now sold out) and worked with Festo, Meta and Amazon Robotics, among others.

Why robots need skin

Dexterous manipulation without a sense of touch is blind — a robot cannot tell how hard it is gripping or whether an object is slipping. Electronic skin over hands and arms provides feedback that cameras alone cannot. That is why tactile sensors are becoming a distinct bottleneck, alongside actuators. Named target customers for the technology include Tesla, OpenAI, Boston Dynamics and 1X Technologies.

Why it matters

The deal shows the humanoid supply chain expanding beyond motors and gears toward the sensor layer. A supplier of car leather that has spent decades working with soft materials may hold a real edge in making flexible electronics at scale.
