Velodyne VLP-16 (Puck)

Velodyne VLP-16 Puck is an iconic compact 3D LiDAR introduced in 2014 — the sensor that revolutionized mobile robotics, vehicle autonomy and 3D mapping thanks to its low mass (830 g) and approachable price compared to the older HDL-64.

16 laser channels at 903 nm arranged across 360° azimuth × 30° elevation rotation (-15° to +15°). 100 m range (at 80% albedo) with ±3 cm accuracy. Generates up to 300,000 points per second (single return) or 600,000 (dual return). Rotation rate 5–20 Hz configurable.

Used in first-generation autonomous vehicles (Google Self-Driving Car, Apollo, Uber ATG), warehouse AMRs, inspection robots and research UAV/UGV platforms. De facto standard in the KITTI benchmark.

Market class

3D LiDAR Sensors are a subcategory of sensing components that use laser radiation to measure distance and construct three-dimensional representations of the environment. These sensors are used in robotics for space mapping, localization, autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, and building 3D perception systems. Depending on the model, they can provide point clouds with varying resolution, frequency, and range, supporting mobile robots, humanoid platforms, and autonomous systems.
