Aletta is an autonomous robotic blood-drawing (venipuncture) device developed by the Dutch company Vitestro, presented as the world’s first fully autonomous device of its kind (Autonomous Robotic Phlebotomy Device). It performs the entire draw on its own — from applying the tourniquet, through locating the vein and inserting the needle, to applying the bandage.
How it works
Aletta combines multimodal near-infrared (NIR) and ultrasound imaging with artificial-intelligence algorithms to locate a suitable vein. Doppler ultrasound is used to confirm that the selected vessel is a vein and not an artery. A robotic mechanism inserts the needle with submillimetre precision.
Clinical study and status
In a multicentre clinical trial (the ADOPT trial, NCT05878483) published in 2026 in Clinical Chemistry and enrolling 1,633 patients, Aletta achieved a first-stick success rate of 94.5%. The device received the CE mark (MDR) in 2024 and is being deployed at sites in the Netherlands and Denmark; in August 2026 it received FDA De Novo authorization in the United States.
