Its roots go back to 1947, when Chung Ju-yung founded Hyundai Engineering & Construction; Hyundai Motor Company was established in 1967. The modern Hyundai Motor Group was spun off from the wider Hyundai Group structure in 2003 and includes Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation and Genesis Motor.
In December 2020 the group announced the acquisition of an 80% stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank Group; the approximately USD 1.1 billion transaction closed on June 21, 2021. Boston Dynamics – maker of the Atlas humanoid robot and the Spot quadruped – has since operated as a subsidiary of the group. SoftBank retained a 20% stake. Hyundai Motor Group also runs its own robotics and mobility programs, including the Hyundai Robotics unit, and is piloting the Electric Atlas in automotive manufacturing environments.
