It was founded in December 2022 in Sydney. The platform offers image generation, a Realtime/Live Canvas feature (turning sketches into images in real time), image-to-video animation (Motion) and training of custom models on user data. In June 2024 the company released Phoenix, its first in-house foundational model, and earlier in 2024 it launched Leonardo for Teams for enterprise collaboration. In October 2023 it raised A$47 million (about US$31 million) in a Series A round. In July 2024 it was acquired by Canva and operates as an independent team within it. By the end of 2024 the platform had – according to Forbes Australia – more than 29 million users.
