The company was founded in 2004 as TheFacebook by Mark Zuckerberg together with Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes; in October 2021, Facebook, Inc. renamed itself Meta Platforms, Inc. Meta owns and operates some of the world's most popular social media platforms and messaging services: Facebook, Instagram (acquired in 2012), WhatsApp (acquired in 2014), Messenger and Threads (2023). The group's revenue is driven mainly by digital advertising, which accounted for about 97.8% of revenue in 2023. The Reality Labs division develops AR/VR/XR hardware and software, including the Meta Quest headsets (formerly Oculus) and metaverse technologies. In AI, Meta develops the open Llama model family (since February 2023; Llama 4 Scout and Maverick, with an MoE architecture and native multimodality, released on April 5, 2025), the Meta AI assistant (over 1 billion monthly active users per Meta's 2025 statements), the SAM 2 and Movie Gen models, and the PyTorch framework (2017, transferred to the Linux Foundation in 2022). AI research is conducted under FAIR (founded in 2013 by Yann LeCun), reorganized in 2025 into Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Meta Platforms employed 74,067 people at the end of 2024 (10-K filed with the SEC) and in 2025 raised its capital expenditure (CapEx) guidance to $66–72 billion, primarily for AI infrastructure.
