An Alphabet subsidiary developing autonomous drone delivery; spun out of Google X and operating as an independent company since 2018.
Wing (Wing Aviation LLC) is a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. developing an autonomous drone delivery system and an unmanned traffic management (UTM) system. The company grew out of 'Project Wing' at X (formerly Google X); it completed its first deliveries in 2014 and, in July 2018, graduated into an independent Alphabet company. Wing's aircraft are VTOL hybrids that combine multirotor propellers with a fixed wing, taking off vertically before transitioning to forward flight, powered by electric batteries. Flight paths are set by Wing's proprietary UTM system, which optimizes for time, distance and obstacle avoidance, aided by onboard black-and-white cameras that detect shapes. In April 2019 Wing became the first drone delivery company to receive an air operator's certificate from the U.S. FAA. It operates in the United States, Australia, Finland and Ireland, with planned expansion to the United Kingdom. As of June 2026 it had completed more than one million commercial deliveries, largely through its partnership with Walmart.
