Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026 that it is retiring Cowork as a separate mode and folding it into Claude chat. At the same time it is launching two new products in beta — Claude Docs and Claude Slides. The rollout starts on September 18 and reaches Pro and Max subscribers first.
Key takeaways
- Cowork disappears as a separate mode — projects, artifacts, connectors and skills stay accessible
- Claude Docs and Claude Slides enter beta with exports to Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint and PDF
- Claude Design now runs directly inside the conversation, with no mode switching
- Rollout from September 18, 2026: Pro and Max first, then Team and Free
- Claude Code is not part of the consolidation
The end of the mode toggle
Until now users had to decide for themselves whether a task belonged in chat or in Cowork. That choice turned out to be the main source of frustration.
People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged.
Anthropic, on consolidating the Claude interface.
Claude now determines on its own whether to answer in conversation or start longer agentic work. Existing Cowork projects, artifacts?Artifacts: An interactive pane beside the chat where Claude creates and edits documents, code or visualisations., connectors and skills remain accessible. Approval settings do not change — by default the model asks before taking an action.
Docs and Slides move into the browser
Claude Docs lets users request a document, edit it and share it without leaving Claude. Documents start private and support simultaneous editing by several people. Claude Slides works the same way for presentations — from generating a deck to presenting it inside Claude. This is a different mechanism from the existing Claude for PowerPoint add-in.
| Claude Docs | Claude Slides | |
|---|---|---|
| Creates | Text documents | Presentations |
| Editing | Simultaneous, multiple people | Slide by slide inside Claude |
| Export | Word, Google Docs | PowerPoint, PDF |
| Sharing | One link, editable on mobile | One link, editable on mobile |
Both products are web-based. Claude Design, previously separate, now runs directly in conversation.
Eight months after the research preview
Cowork launched on January 12, 2026 as a research preview — "Claude Code for the rest of your work," an attempt to bring agentic capability to nontechnical users. Claude Code itself stays outside this change and remains a tool for developers working in terminals and IDEs.
Why it matters
Anthropic is conceding that a separate agentic mode was a design mistake, not a user education gap. Moving routing from the human to the model is a bet that Claude will correctly judge when a task needs minutes of work instead of seconds. Docs and Slides simultaneously push the company into territory held by Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 — this time not as an add-in to someone else's suite, but as its own document layer.
What's next?
- The rollout starts September 18, 2026 with Pro and Max plans on web, desktop and mobile, then extends to Team and Free
- Anthropic says more export formats are coming to Claude Docs beyond Word and Google Docs
- Claude for PowerPoint stays a separate add-in alongside Claude Slides
