aibo (ERS-1000) is the fourth-generation robotic dog from Sony, announced in November 2017 and released in Japan on 11 January 2018. It is the first model of the revived aibo line after the series was discontinued in 2006.
The robot moves through 22 axes driven by ultra-compact 1- and 2-axis actuators, and expresses emotions via two OLED displays acting as eyes. It is built around a 64-bit quad-core CPU and features two cameras (a front camera and a SLAM camera), a ToF sensor, touch sensors on the head, back and jaw, four microphones and a speaker.
Full functionality requires an aibo Basic Plan subscription: Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) and LTE connectivity enable cloud processing, allowing the robot to recognise up to 100 faces, respond to more than 50 voice commands, learn behaviours and develop its own personality. Using SLAM it maps its surroundings and autonomously returns to its charging station.
