Mistral AI SAS is a French artificial intelligence company headquartered in Paris, founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch (CEO, formerly Google DeepMind), Guillaume Lample (Chief Scientist, formerly Meta AI, co-creator of the LLaMA model), and Timothée Lacroix (CTO, formerly Meta AI). All three founders studied at École Polytechnique. The company specialises in building large language models (LLMs) with high computational efficiency, available both as open-weight releases (Apache 2.0) and in proprietary variants. Key models include: Mistral 7B (September 2023), Mixtral 8x7B with a Mixture of Experts architecture (December 2023), Mistral Large (February 2024), Mixtral 8x22B (April 2024), Mistral NeMo 12B (July 2024, jointly with NVIDIA), Pixtral 12B and Large (2024), Magistral (reasoning models, June 2025), Mistral Large 3 MoE and Devstral (December 2025), and Voxtral (audio models, July 2025). The consumer product Le Chat (chatbot) launched in February 2024, with an iOS/Android mobile version in February 2025. The developer platform La Plateforme provides a usage-based API. Within 29 months of its founding, the company raised a total of over €2.8 billion across four funding rounds. The post-Series C valuation (September 2025, lead: ASML, €1.3 billion) stands at €11.7 billion. ASML holds approximately 11% of shares. Strategic partners include Microsoft (Azure, February 2024) and NVIDIA. The company maintains offices in Paris, London, Luxembourg, Singapore, and Amsterdam.
